You know as a company, we LOVE coming out and ridding you of your nuisance critters, big and small. But sadly, as a homeowner, I’m sure you’d much rather never see us. Here’s some helpful hints for you, to help keep the AWC team out of your door yard (New England saying, ya it’s a thing!)

Bird Feeders: Homeowner Tip #1 We all love seeing our magenta footed purple bellied bent nosed finch swing through in the morning for some breakfast crunchies, but truth is, he’s spilling more on the ground than he’s eating and if you insist on keeping that little bird buffet within 30 feet of the house, you will have some more critters you can enjoy the feast. Mice and Rats, yup…RATS. They will LOVE all the seed hitting the ground and they’ll spend the whole summer stuffing it in every crevice of your home. Gotta get ready for winter and tough times like when there’s no seed cause you forget to fill it again. So, unless you wanna find a nice little nest in your waders, I suggest you keep those feeders at least thirty feet from your house. This allows you to easily watch your pickle nosed flutter swallow without putting a food source for rodents right at the foundation of your home.

Window Screens and A/C Units: Homeowner Tip #2 Never fails every year from late July right into the fall months, we know our sleep as we know, it is no more. Young bats have been born and their doing typical juvenile stuff and ending up where they don’t belong… like in your bedroom because you didn’t take the time to make sure there were no gaps around that window shaker you just installed to cool the room off.  Bats need next to nothing for a gap to get in, so make sure to do that extra step and tape it all off. Also, look above the a/c unit. Is there a gap between the windows that could let them through? Stick some foam in there or a towel, if need be, to keep them from sneaking in….you’ll thank us for that trust me. CHECK YOUR WINDOW SCREENS!! Just because you took the time to peel those screens off the windows for the winter and store them in the shed doesn’t mean they’re safe.  I swear rodents love chewing on those, just to do it. So when you dust them of for the season, check them over good when you install them. Check for proper fit and for tears/holes that could allow uninvited guests in for the night. Nothing says “mood kill” like a bat chasing you under the covers!
